Many of Russell’s paintings show landscapes through windows—often the large window of his Kittery studio. Other paintings, especially interior settings for florals, peek through open doors to reveal views of adjacent rooms in their homes in Kittery and Boston. Those rooms, too, often appear in other paintings. Russell’s Bedroom with sleeping cat is reminiscent of Van Gogh’s Bedroom at Arles.
