Russell and Matty were devoted to cats, and a series of felines were their children throughout their years together. Russell’s cartoons illustrating Matty’s humorous stories spoofing Alfred Tennyson’s Lady Clara Vere de Vere were produced for Christmas in the 1930s for their dear friends Penny and Louis Hyde. These cat follies were hastily executed in pen, ink and water color on writing paper. Ten that we know of have survived. See also the Cat Gallery.
